Mike Bicknell and Hargis Harris founded Bick and Harris Nursery in the year 2000. As health issues and age caught up with us, we decided it was time to retire and enjoy fishing. The nursery went through several changes, becoming known as Marigold’s Nursery and later Double J Nursery, before going dormant for several years.

Inspired by a book on marketing strategy, I decided to revive the nursery. I ordered some plant plugs but quickly realized I no longer had the energy to get the job done alone. I enlisted the help of a former employee and my 16-year-old granddaughter, who brought along her 7-year-old sister. To my amazement, the 7-year-old took control immediately, managing tasks efficiently and ensuring that the others never ran out of pots, tags, fertilizer, and weed control supplies. She kept the work area clean while potting up plants herself, all without any instructions. I paid her the same as the others.

The next day, she told her dad to let me know she would work for free. I paid her $10 per hour, plus a meal at our favorite restaurant, and sometimes an ice cream on the way home. Her younger siblings have also shown the same work ethic, eagerly awaiting their turn to work at the nursery. Now, at ages 12, 10, and 8, they have all become excellent propagators.

We considered several names, including “Papa’s Nursery” and “The Bicknell Bunch,” which my son uses for his Facebook page. Ultimately, we decided on “Bicknell Nursery.”

Our marketing strategy is to sell most of our landscape plants for $10 or less in gallon pots.
With the help of these excellent nursery propagators, most of our plants will be grown from start to finish here at Bicknell Nursery.
